IT'S A NEW (DOROTHY) DAY! CORNEL WEST DENOUNCES COMMUNIST CHINA OCCUPATION OF TIBET.
Cornel West, a vibrant messenger of the relevance of Black Power to Jewish Power, Norwegian Power, Palestinian Power, Latino Power,
Tibetan Power, Sri Lankan Power, Australian Power, New York City Power, Flower Power, et. al., was the guest speaker at the November 8 Catholic Worker evening mass and rally in Manhattan celebrating the 116th birthday of candidate for sainthood Christian human rights activist Dorothy Day. Mr. West, like myself, is one of millions of people who never met Brooklyn born and later Staten Island resident Dorothy Day, who regard her as a revolutuionary in the tradition of - in chronological order - Moses, Jesus, Mahatma Gandhi, Martin Luther King and the 14th Dalai Lama of Tibet.
In his talk before a standing room only audience at the Catholic Worker Maryhouse in the East Village, Dr. West repeatedly invoked the teachings of Ms. Day, reminded us that truth is often a casualty in market-riven societies, a rephrasing of Jesus's generally ignored warning (First Timothy 6:10) that the love of money is the root of all sorts of evil. He made numerous references to Jewish theologians such as Martin Buber and Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel, who, like Jesus, advocated a very different love object - people!
During the Q&A Dr. West had an opportunity to talk politics. Even within the context of the Obama presidency, he said that tension within the political power elite is between the radical right and the "moderate" right, otherwise euphemistically called the center. He expressed the view, which I share that, even aliowing for some significant actions against some corporate robber barons, most of the worst of them succeed in escaping personal responsibility. In this Mr. West was in fact expressing agreement with Jeffery Sachs, the head of the Earth Institutute at Columbia University, who, at the recent Robin Hood tax Campaign conference in Washington that I attended, said that folks like JP Morgan/Chase CEO Jamie Dimon , et, al. belong behind bars. Along those lines, SEC CEO multibillionaire hedge fund derivative emperor Steven Cohen has carried chutzpah far too far and, as far as I am concerned, should be "hedging" his bets and "occupying" a cell at,
say, Leavenworth Penitentiary or perhaps the less restrictive Danbury, locatted in Connecticut and therefore closer to Wall Street.
Dr. West refers to himself as a "democratic socialist", reminding us of the work of Michael Harrington and Norman Thomas. As I am certain that Dr. West is aware, the term "socialist" has been misused and abused by people such as mass murderers Joseph Stalin, Adolf Hitler who called himself "National Socialist", the abbreviated translation of which is "Nazi", and Mao Zedong. (I blame Karl Marx for much of this with his "socialist" prophesy of the "dictatorship of the proletariat", a prediction that opened the ideological doors for psychopaths including Stalin/ Hitler/Mao and also Pol Pot (who, with Maoist help, genocided Cambodia, American fuehrer-wannabe Lyndon H. LaRouche, Jr. and his ideological offspring such as "Dr." Fred Newman, Lenora Fulani and "The Jewzi" Geoffrey Blank, et. al.)
Indeed it is possible that, given his very understandable antipathy for tax evading corporate moniopolists, Cornel West may be on his way to becoming an Andrew Mazzone-style "neo-Georgist", advocating the economically democratic concept of the land value tax put forth by 19th century economist-activist (and second place finisher in the 1886 election for mayor of New York City) Henry George.
Cornel West and I had met for a few minutes on an unscheduled basis in 2000 at Rev. Al Sharpton's National Action Network HQ in Harlem when Rev. Sharpton expressed his support for Ralph Nader's presidential campaign. On the dais, aside from Rev. Sharpton and Mr. Nader, were
Cornel West and Patti Smith. And so, before the start of the press conference I went up to the dais, introduced myself to Dr. West and spent a few minutes discussing primarily the Chinese Communist racist Genocide in illegally occupied Tibet. Dr. West told me of his interest in the Tibet issue.
And so I was very gratifed when I approached Dr. West after the brief mass at the Catholic Worker Maryhouse and found that he remembered me and our years ago conversation about Tibet.
Cornel West did not disappoint when, in response to my question that included my expressed view that President Obama's claims to be the anti-genocide president are hollow in consideration of his timidity vis a vis China on the ongoing Geocide in Tibet, Dr. West said that Tibet is an occupied country and forcefully expressed his opposition to all occupations by a foreign power.
The reality is that - like Nazi Germany - the government of "Communist" China is racist, fascist and imperialist.
And it is time for Barack Obama to (re)read the UP FRONT News articles I personally gave to his wife when she and I met on June 26, 2008 at the Our Children's Foundation in Harlem and I told her about the Genocide in Tibet. As God (and NYS Senator Bill Perkins) were my witnesses.
It is time for Barack Obama to listen to Dr. Cornel West.
And it is time for Barack Obama to tell China that it is (way past) time to get out of Tibet!
c.c. Cornel West, Robert Thurman, Jeffrey Sachs
