It will be interesting to see if the New York Metropolitan Alliance of Anarchists has demo- cratized itself. In past years it has been my experience, shared to varying degrees by others, that NYMAA was a very ironic group in that it had a government apparently run by a small group which considered the group exempt from the provisions of the First Amendment.
A couple of years ago I got booted from the NYMAA list-serve (to which, despite various assurances to the contrary, I have not yet been restored) because I had sent a reply e-mail to the list-serve containing a mild compliment for former Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards. I got some hate mail in response and when I replied I was accused of over-using the list-serve. At a NYMAA assembly there was the anarchist version of a trial and, much to the chagrin of the very autocratic "Moose", a NYMAA honcho at the time, I was restored to the list-serve. At the time NYMAA was quite strongly influenced by people connected to the pseudo-leftist and deposed dictator of Union Square Geoffrey Blank. Blank's people in NYMAA included Green Party members or hangers on like Ben Maurer, Fran ("Bad") Luck, Paul ("Zool") Zulkowitz, and Pistol Pete Dolack, the latter being a Maoism- spouting "poet" who, like Blank, Zulkowitz, et. al., carried the message of none other than "left/right/left" megalomaniac Lyndon H. LaRouche, Jr. LaRouche's people have made significant infiltration inroads into the Lower Manhattan-peopled "left", in particular via the so-called "9/11 Truth", based at St. Mark's in-the-Bowery Church and autocratically led by Les ("Less") Jamieson and "Father" Frank Morales, where dissent generates Jamieson/Morales-verbalized threats and sometimes worse. For more on LaRouche visit, aside from UP FRONT News, http://lyndonlarouchewatch.org and www.dennisking.org.
A similar NYMAA censorship scenario was played out about a year later when, in response to a NYMAA person's list-serve announcement that she was planning a trip to China, I sent an e-mail providing some facts about the possible consequences facing an anarchist tourist in a nation ruled by a surveillance-obsessed totalitarian regime that practices genocide by proxy (Darfur) and directly (Tibet). Again the replies included some hate mail and I was again removed from the list-serve.
The last NYMAA general assembly I attended - after which I was assured of restoration to the list-serve (it's a good thing NYMAA is not in charge of the restoration of post-Katrina New Orleans) Moose was mercifully absent and was in fact the subject of much criticism for some correspondence relating to the relationship between NYMAA and the landlord of the group's office space.
Perhaps the most interesting part of the meeting was near the end when media activist Priya ("Warcry") Reddy asked for support in the wake of what she described as some serious harassment she had experienced at a New Left Forum in a previous year.
As far as I am concerned, although I was not a witness to the Warcry War, in which the new Left people reportedly called the cops, the New Left bunch are a classic example of how politically bereft the establishment left is. As reported in UP FRONT News, the most recent New Left Conference with its gentrification level cover charge, essentially disenfranchised much of the working class that it claims to speak for. Much of that cover charge presumably went to pay some of the speakers and some went to pay the rent to the event landlord Cooper Union. "Socialist" capitalism.
And as I reported, the politically fraudulent nature of the generally upscale New Left Confer- ence this past April is exemplified by the speaker prominence given to the so-called and tightly censored "Indypendent" and to people like the corporate executive level paid Amy Goodman, the pontificator on the censored show she calls "Democracy Now" but is known among UP FRONT News readers as "Democracy Later."
And at NYMAA I guess it's "Democracy Maybe."
